Dangerous wild animals

Under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 certain animals and reptiles are listed as being dangerous and while you can buy them, you need a licence to keep them. If you are not sure whether an animal you want to buy falls into this category please contact licensing for advice.

Very strict rules apply for the construction of the animal's accommodation and a vet's inspection will always be required. Anyone keeping an animal on the list without a licence runs the risk of prosecution and confiscation of the animal.

When granting the licence we will consider:

  • Public interest on grounds of safety, nuisance or otherwise.
  • The proposed accommodation is suitable and will not allow the animal to escape.
  • That adequate and suitable food, drink, bedding material is provided and that the animal is visited regularly.
  • That the animal is protected in case of emergencies such as fire.
  • All reasonable precautions are to be taken to prevent control and spread of diseases.
  • That the animal can take adequate exercise.

A list of dangerous wild animals is provided below.

The licence doesn't apply to dangerous wild animal kept in a zoo; circus; pet shop; or registered scientific establishment. See our information on zoos.
