Pet shop licences

If you keep animals to sell as pets, at any domestic or commercial property, you will need a pet shop licence.

You cannot sell animals as pets in any part of a street, in a public place, or at a stall or barrow in a market.

There are minimum ages at which mammals can be sold.

You don't need a pet shop licence if you only keep pedigree animals which you breed, or you sell the offspring of an animal you keep as a pet. Equally you don't need a pet shop licence if you breed pedigrees or acquire them for show, and occasionally sell an animal as a pet which is not suitable. In this case you may need a dog breeding licence, see dog breeding for more information.

You can download a pet shop licence application or contact us for more information.

Your application may require planning permission. Please see our planning information.
