Premises Licence

You need a premises licence if you or your company propose to offer gambling at your premises.

A premises licence application can be made to the local authority at the same time as an application for an operators licence is made to the Gambling Commission. However the premises licence cannot be issued until the commission has issued an operating licence.

Premises licences have an unlimited duration. It can be revoked by the licensing authority, suspended by the holder or lapse due to death or bankruptcy. Premises licences can be issued to authorise premises to be used for:

The operation of a casino (casino premises licence)

The provision of facilities for the playing of bingo (bingo premises licence)

Making Category B gaming machines available for use (adult gaming centre premises licence)

Making Category C gaming machines available for use (family entertainment centre premises licence)

The provision of facilities for betting (betting premises licence)
Conditions will be attached to premises licences. The Act provides for two specific types of conditions. The first are mandatory conditions, specific to each type of licence and these will appear on every licence. The second set of conditions is known as default conditions, which unless excluded or modified these will also appear on the premises licence.
