Temporary events

If you plan to sell alcohol or provide entertainment or late night refreshment at your temporary event you need a Temporary Event Notice (TEN).

For information about fire safety please go to the fire safety guides link at the bottom of this page.

A Temporary Event Notice is not a licence or permission - it is a right given to certain people (minimum age of 18), which can be taken away if the police actively object.  We must receive the request for the Temporary Event Notice a minimum of 10 working days before the event , not counting the day of the event or the day of delivery of the notice, with a fee of £21.00.

Anyone not holding a Personal Licence can have up to 5 Temporary Event Notices per year.  A Personal Licence holder can have up to 50 Temporary Event Notices per year but only 12 in one location.

At a glance - the limits of a Temporary Event Notice are:

  • You must have fewer than 500 people attending
  • It can last up to a maximum of 96 hours - no more.
  • There must be a 24 hour gap between notices
  • Maximum of 50 events per year for a Personal Licence holder
  • Maximum of 5 events per year (without a Personal Licence)

Maximum of  12 Temporary event notices per location in a 12 month period but  must not total more than 15 days per location per year.

Please note:

The notice must be served at least ten working days prior to the event.  In practice this means that the day it is received and the day of the event do not count.  e.g. If an event is on a Friday, the TEN must be served on the Licensing Authority  on the Thursday fortnight before the event.  Add extra days if a Bank Holiday falls between the day of receipt and the event.  If you need advice please contact the Licensing Section.
