Taxi licensing

In order to operate a vehicle for the purpose of transporting paying passengers, you will require certain licences. In Aylesbury Vale any vehicle which carries 8 passengers or less must be licensed, as well as any driver and also the operator of the company.

The following pages are created to provide you with all the information you need so that you can complete an application to become a driver, licence a vehicle or set up a private hire operation.

We detail what the requirements are for each licence as well as provide some information on why we licence, what can determine your ability to obtain a licence and some useful contact details.

Taxi Licensing is built from a framework of legislation. The two most important pieces of legislation are the following:

Local Government (miscellaneous provisions) Act 1976
Town Police Clauses Act 1847

From this legislation we have created a local taxi policy. This takes into account the Department for Transport best practice guidelines as well as an understanding of our local economy. This allows us to tailor conditions and standards of our policy that would best improve the service for the local community. These conditions range from ensuring that our drivers complete mandatory Driving Standards Agency (DSA) tests to limiting the age of vehicles that we licence which improves the safety standards of the fleet of vehicles.
