Recycling your business waste
Storing your materials on site
Materials must be separated into different types for storage, transport and recycling within sealed, labelled containers.
Designated containment areas for storage and transporting materials for recycling must be created.
Hazardous/special waste must be stored separately. Hazardous/special waste includes:
- Computer monitors
- Fridges
- Chemicals
- Oils
Licences you may require
You may require a waste management licence; waste broker’s or waste carrier’s registration if you do anything with your waste materials apart from transport them for recycling.
You must register as a waste carrier or transporter if you transport waste others have produced.
Only correctly licensed businesses can transport hazardous/special waste.
Recycling your materials
The three main ways for businesses to recycle their materials is to use local councils,
recycling organisations or commercial recycling contractors.
Recycling and waste records
Waste transfer notes must be kept every time materials classified as hazardous/special waste leave your site for recycling. These must be signed by you and whoever takes the material and have to be kept for at least 3 years from the date of issue.
