tackling drugs

This section of the website is about drug and alcohol use and abuse in the vale.

Drug and alcohol abuse has a profound impact upon a community. The drug and alcohol action team lead initiatives to reduce crimes associated with drugs and alcohol.

These initiatives include:

  • Community violence project

The reducing community violence project started in March 2008. It is a six week course run for those on the Pubwatch scheme to look at alcohol, relationships and violence.

  • Prevention club

Prevention Club is aimed at educating communities on drug misuse and its consequences. It uses those who have experienced drug abuse first hand to present clear and real life accounts of the problems drug users face and cause.

  • Treatment services

The drugs intervention programme is a scheme which aims to reduce drug use and criminal activity amongst drug misusing offenders. This is achieved through intervention in the form of treatment.

  • Needle disposal and distribution

  • Operation falcon

This year has seen Operation Falcon continue in its efforts with partners to tackle drug supply on our streets and to engage with drug users for treatment through the drug and alcohol action team, SMART and ADDACTION all playing vitals roles in ensuring people can receive treatment for their addiction and prevent crime from occurring to fund these habits.

The notable success of Falcon this year has to be the large scale undercover operation mounted between May and August 2007.  During this period the Drugs team from Aylesbury identified three drug dealing networks supplying Crack Cocaine and Heroin.  This operation culminated in the execution of 30 warrants issued (the largest amount in this area at any one time ever completed), and led to the arrest of more than 30 people.

Through the drug and alcohol action team who were aware of the operation from an early stage, all persons arrested were given the opportunity to engage with treatment workers and be provided with on going care, the court results have yielded in excess of 40 custodial year sentences so far and the drug networks destroyed
