General advice

This section of the website provides some more general advice about securing your garden and its belongings.

To make sure your garden is as secure as possible, and to deter burglars you should consider the following:

  • Is your shed secure?

Use a lock to secure your shed and non-returnable screws on the hinges.

  • Are valuable items properly marked?

Use a UV property marker for valuable items and a marker pen on more heavy duty items such as lawnmowers and items more prone to the weather.

  • Is there anything left out in the garden that could be used to break into your property with?

Leaving tools in the garden gives and opportunity to a burglar to access your property, tidying tools away and locking them securely in a garage or shed will prevent this.

  • Are garden ornaments secured, marked and photographed?

Ornaments can be stolen and where possible effort can be made to secure them. Items can also be recorded to easily identify any missing items following a theft.

  • Is the boundary secure?

The boundary can be the first point of access and using pyracantha or similar varieties can deter burglars due to their prickly nature.

  • Is the area well lit?

Lighting the area is a great way of being made aware any intruders are in your garden, burglars don't want to attract any attention to themselves and lighting is an effective method of combating this.
