Help keep burglary low across Aylesbury Vale

Our latest summertime burglary campaign launched in July 2010. Find out how you can keep you home safe and secure this summer. Open the file below to read our leaflet and spot the difference!

Stop the Burglar, Spot the Difference

Aylesbury Vale’s Community Safety Partnership is placing Stop the Burglar Spot the Difference banners in shops across the district to inform the public about how to secure their homes and prevent house burglaries over the summer months.

The partnership has also produced leaflets in conjunction with Thames Valley Crimestoppers publicising the number that residents can use anonymously to pass on information about a crime. These will be available at the point of sale in a number of shops so residents can Spot the Difference while waiting to pay for their goods. You can also see the campaign in full on our website, www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/communitysafety.

Throughout the summer members of the Aylesbury Vale Community Safety Partnership will send out a simple message to people: don’t make your house an easy target for burglars; shut it, and lock it.

If you’re going abroad on holiday, chances are you will get one of our leaflets handed to you if you purchase your currency or book at a travel agent within the district.

Although the risk of becoming a victim in Aylesbury Vale is low, it is worth thinking about your own security measures to ensure you have no unwanted visitors in your home while you are away enjoying your holiday.

Matthew Deprez, Community safety at AVDC says “The likelihood of being a burglary victim is much lower now than a few years back, however tackling burglaries is a constant challenge and the summer months typically present increased opportunity. People tend to leave doors and windows insecure due to the heat, securing ground floor windows is a priority, even when you’re at home.”

“As we head towards summer lots of us are out working in the garden, presenting an opportunity for burglars to enter through the front of the house. It’s therefore very important to remember to keep your property secure.”

So rather than leave it until the last minute when all you should be worried about is packing your holiday clothes, the Community Safety Partnership suggests taking a little time now to look at your home security:

• Remember to close and lock your doors and windows, whether you are just in the garden, upstairs or out.

• Ensure your home looks occupied even when you’re away – for example, user timer switches for lights, cancel milk or mow the lawn before you go.

• Mark belongings visibly and permanently with your house number and postcode using a UV marker pen.

Residents can seek advice about keeping their homes safe at various ‘Have Your Say’ meetings taking place across the Vale. To find your nearest one you can call 0845 8 505 505.

To report a crime anonymously, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. You will not be asked for your name, you won’t have to be a witness and nobody will know you called.
