Switch positive behaviours

Switch positive behaviours

This section is about how we work with young people to reduce antisocial behaviour. Most of our work with young people is in partnership with other agencies such as youth services, the youth offending team, and young addaction.

Here are a few projects we have been working in during 2010/ 2011 with young people.

  • Switch is a positive behaviours project in Walton Court. It started in July 2010 and was designed to work with young people who may be involved in disorder. Switch involves community safety, sports development, detached youth work, Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust, and Thames Valley Police. The project rewards positive behaviour, with the young people involved in the scheme agreeing good behaviours such as 'I will not swear in public' and 'I took part in a Walton Court litter pick'. Local retailers backed the scheme with a view to improving relations between young people, shopkeepers, and residents. The project culminated in a graffiti wall which the young people designed and created.
  • A new film club for the Quarrendon area launched on 26 November 2010. The film club gave local young people interested in films the opportunity to come along to the Jonathan Page play centre and watch a Hollywood Blockbuster. In addition to the film, food and drinks were provided with a special guest or activity each week. A popular theme was self defence so young people from the area enjoyed Kung Fu Panda and an interactive demonstration from a local martial arts expert. Films were delivered on Friday night's from 7pm and 12 sessions were delivered in total. The scheme is being delivered by Young Addaction and funded by AVDC and the Greater Aylesbury LAF (Local Area Forum). We are currently working on a toolkit to assist others roll out their own community film club. Contact Community Safety if you would like more information in the mean time. Our top tips are:
  1. Get a film licence for the venue, this is available from the Motion Picture Licensing Company
  2. Get the young people involved in the film choices
  3. If you want to run a workshop alongside the film, think carefully about the time constraints
  4. Make sure you have a pool of qualified staff to deliver the project and attend each session
  5. Make it a fun, interesting, and a safe environment.
