Home alone

If you’re going to be at home alone for any reason there are a few tips you should keep in mind to make sure you stay safe and are prepared in case of an emergency. It may never happen but at least you will know what to do if it does:

  • When you get home make sure you lock the door behind you
  • If you can, text your parents or guardians to let them know that you got home safely
  • When it gets dark remember to draw the curtains
  • If someone telephones the house try not to let them know you are home alone
  • If someone knocks at the door try and see who it is before you answer, if you are unsure who it is don’t answer
  • If someone calls to read a gas or electricity meter ask them to call back at a more convenient time
  • Make sure you have a list of telephone numbers of family or friends you can call in an emergency
  • If you think you hear an intruder call the police
