Travelling by bus or train

Before you travel try to tell someone where you are going and what time you expect to arrive. If you can, try and get someone to meet you at the other end once you arrive.

Follow these safety tips to remain alert and most of all safe:

  • wait for a bus or train in a well lit location and near to other people if possible
  • have your travel pass, tickets or fare ready for the driver or inspection so that you don’t have to get your wallet/purse out
  • pickpockets often target people on trains or buses keep your belongs, especially your money and your mobile phone, close to you
  • try to sit in open carriages with other people so you’re not on your own
  • on a bus sit downstairs as you’re more isolated upstairs
  • try and sit in an aisle seat and stay close to the driver
  • if someone sits by you and makes you feel uneasy, get up and move
  • notice where the alarms are in case of an emergency
