Barn Owl Scheme

Barn Owl & Conservaton Officer
The Barn Owl Scheme is run by volunteers and provides nest boxes for farmers and advice on land management. Barn Owl boxes are available, for landowners with suitable land, for a donation which pays for the boxes and the expenses of the volunteers. Barn Owls rely on areas of rough grassland as they are home to small mammals, such as mice and voles, which the birds will feed on. To date the volunteers have erected 150 boxes and are running a programme of monitoring their use and ringing the offspring. We are grateful to inmates at Springhill Prison who construct the boxes.
The scheme, as with the other species- specific promotions, forms a way of introducing the services of the Team to farmers. In many instances the first meeting has led on to additional conservation measures such as hedge planting or pond creation.
