Aylesbury Vale is home to over half the national population of the rare native Black Poplar trees and AVDC has led the way nationally in their conservation.

The Black Poplar is one of our rarest native trees. Aylesbury Vale holds the highest density of these trees in the country which account for over 50% of the national population. These trees provide a fantastic backdrop to views in the vale with their huge size, downward arching branches and red catkins in the spring giving a scarlet hue to the landscape. AVDC co-ordinates the National Black Poplar Conservation Group which is an affiliation of likeminded organisations and individuals dedicated to the conservation of the species. This group promotes Black Poplar Conservation through raising public awareness, planting programmes, genetic research, giving advice on tree management, establishment of clone banks and by organising conferences.

2011

The AVDC Biodiversity Team donated 35 Black Poplar Trees to the Royal London Boroughs to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012. These were presented to the Mayor of London by Sir David Attenborough at Holland Park in London. Head of Leisure, Lesley Davies, and Biodiversity Officer, Matt Dodds, were invited to attend on behalf of AVDC.
