Places To Visit

If you would like to find out about more places to visit in Aylesbury Vale contact us for a ‘Wildlife in the Vale’ leaflet or download a copy below.

Finemere Wood
This large ancient woodland, owned and managed by the Berks Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), was originally a part of the Mediaeval Great Forest of Bernwood. It is surrounded by several other woodlands of a similar age which makes their significance to nature conservation even greater. It supports a great diversity of species of woodland plants and animals throughout the year but is a particularly interesting site to visit in the autumn because of its fungi.

There are a large number of different fungi species but here are some special ones to look out for: Death Cap, The Panther, The Prince, Velvet Shank, Oak Milk-cap, Jew’s-ear and Razor Strop. Why not buy yourself a Mushroom Identification Guidebook and see how many you can find. Remember to send the records of what you find to BBOWT and Bucks Environmental Records Centre so that the information is recorded.

Directions

Weston Turville Reservoir
This is a large body of water surrounded by reedbeds and woodland which give it an enclosed feel. It is a good place to visit all year round but has some interesting features that make it a good place to visit in the autumn.

In autumn and winter harsh weather often drives water birds inland and they can turn up in sheltered lakes such as this one. Keep an eye out for the sawbills in particular such as Goosander, Red-breasted Merganser and, if you are really lucky, Smew.

The reedbeds at Weston Turville are an ideal spot for roosting birds. At this time of the year birds such as finches gather into large flocks which can often be found in reedbeds. Dusk is a good time to watch them as they wheel about before bedtime. Large numbers of Corn Buntings have also been seen here.
