Pitstone windmill

Pitstone windmill

A listed building is acknowledged by the Secretary of State to be of special architectural or historic interest.

The word building is used very generally and includes buildings such as houses, churches, schools and barns, but also includes items such as walls, tomb stones, milestones, ice houses, bridges and locks, telephone and post boxes. There are about 2900 listed buildings in the Vale.To check whether a building is listed and to read the list description click to view Is my Building listed or in a conservation area.

For more information on listed and historic buildings download our leaflets below.

Once listed, a building has special protection under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and we have additional powers of protection. Owners have extra responsibilities, for example the need to obtain listed building consent for certain work on the building. It is an offence to carry out works to a listed building without consent.

Download the listed building application form and notes to apply for listed building consent. Also download the guidance on the specific additional information which may be needed with your application.

If you have any further questions please talk to the Listed Building officer about any work you plan to do on your listed building?

For more general information on all old buildings please follow the links to the historical societies below.
