Will the Council become involved?

AVDC will only get involved with blocked drains and sewers if there is a risk to public health. If the problem is with a private sewer, and the householders can’t co-operate in arranging for the work to be done, we have legal powers to serve a statutory notice on those responsible.

If the problem is a simple blockage, then legally we must give people a minimum of 48 hours to do the works themselves.

If the private sewer or drain requires repair, then legally we must give people a reasonable amount of time to do the works, which is a minimum of 21 days.

Subsequently, if the work is not carried out within the time limits in the notice, we will arrange to have the work done and charge those responsible for the cost.
