Noise and dust from construction sites

Noise from construction sites

To help minimise the noise pollution caused by construction and demolition works, we have the power under section 60 of the Control of Pollution Act 1974 to specify how the work is carried out. There is also a code of practice (BS5228) which suggests ways of reducing such noise.

On a construction site noisy works should be carried out during the following times:

Monday to Friday: 8.00am to 6.00pm
Saturday : 8.00am to 1.00pm
Sunday/Bank holidays: No noisy work

This does not apply to emergencies such as power failures/gas leaks/water leaks. Also, it does not mean that the construction work cannot happen out of these times, but noisy work should not be undertaken.

Dust from construction sites

In order to minimise the risk of dust from construction sites, which may cause a nuisance, the Environmental Health Department have issued a guidance note aimed at developers. This guidance note entitled 'Construction Site Dust Management Guidance' explains the relevant legislation in addition to practical measures aimed to prevent or minimise dust emissions. The guidance note can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
