Smoke Control Areas

A Smoke Control Area is an area, established by a local authority, in which smoke caused by the burning of coal and wood must not be discharged from domestic chimneys. Only authorised solid smokeless fuels should be used. Alternatively, switching to gas, electricity or oil should be considered.

Authorised solid fuels are products like anthracite, low volatile steam coals and most of the commercial smokeless fuels.  For a current list of approved solid fuel products and services please contact the Solid Fuel Association (see link below).

The smoke control program was completed some years ago and we obtained dramatic reductions in smoke and sulphur dioxide levels at ground level. In Aylesbury 3 smoke control areas were created. These areas are to the east of Aylesbury, primarlily between the A41 and A413.

Garden bonfires in smoke control areas

The main purpose of a smoke control area is to reduce pollution from domestic chimneys within the district by prohibiting the burning of fuels such as coal and wood on open fires. Smoke control legislation does not apply to garden bonfires.

Please see the section of our website relating to bonfires.
