Talk by Ed Grimsdale - How we have changed Buckingham
Ed's illustrated talk will tell the story of 20th century Buckingham as we changed it from a quiet market town with more sheep than cars to today's vibrant home for 12,000 people. Helen Walker has kindly given her collection of coloured slides to the Old Gaol Museum. This talk will be the first opportunity to see them in a newly restored and digitised form. There will be pictures of jewels replaced by carbuncles; a run-down dairy revived as a university; our town hall saved by local action and our railway axed by Dr Beeching. Green fields and tree-fringed hills will be seen transformed into housing estates and a by-pass. Finally, by looking at the changes wrought to our town over the 20th century, we see what lessons can be learned as we contemplate what we shall do to Buckingham over the 21st century?
