Disabled facilities grants
Mandatory disabled facilities grants may be payable towards the cost of having adaptations carried out, or facilities to assist with access, provided in the homes of people with a disability. This will enable people to retain their independence and helps reduce the chances of an accident. The specific areas that we must consider applications for are laid down in legislation.
The process involves an assessment of need by the Community Occupational Therapy Service. If that assessment establishes a need where a grant may be appropriate, then they will tell us. Any grant application will be considered against the list of matters for giving a mandatory grant. We will also need to consider if the works proposed are reasonable and practicable.
Disabled Facilities Grants are means tested (except in the case of works for children) so that the level of any grant approved will reflect the reasonable cost of the works and the ability of the person to fund those works, through their income and savings.
