Main causes and symptoms of food poisoning
The most common food borne bacteria causing illness are on the left.
The main causes of food poisoning are:
- Preparing foods too far in advance
- Not defrosting foods properly
- Not cooking food thoroughly
- Incorrect storage of foods i.e. too warm – bacteria can multiply quickly
- Cross contamination of foods after cooking
- Infection from people handling foods due to poor hygiene i.e. lack of hand washing
Symptoms include:
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Stomach cramps
- Fever
- Nausea
- Headache
- Dizziness
