Discretionary Housing Payments

We may award discretionary housing payments (DHPs) where we consider you need more help with your housing or council tax costs. The amount we can pay out is limited and we cannot go above it.

There are 2 separate DHP schemes:

  • 1 scheme covers shortfalls between rent liability and payment of housing benefit
  • 1 scheme covers shortfalls between council tax liability and council tax benefit entitlement.

DHPs are not a payment of housing benefit or council tax benefit. To get DHP you must be entitled to housing or council tax benefit.

How can I claim DHP?

A claim for DHP may be made in writing and signed by the claimant or by recorded telephone call.

Our DHP policy gives further details on how we operate the scheme and what we consider when we decide if a DHP can be made (follow the link below for details).
