Harassment and illegal eviction
In this section of our web site we provide general information on harassment and what you can do about it. For further advice, please do not hesitate to call our Housing Needs and Advice team on the number provided below. We will do all we can to help you.
What is harassment?
Harassment includes any action committed by your landlord or someone else to deliberately unsettle your home life. Harassment can be:
- Interfering with services such as gas, electricity or water.
- Threatening you if you refuse to leave the property.
- Changing the locks or removing your belongings.
- Late night visits by your landlord.
- Constant telephone calls and/or text messages.
The most common reason for harassment is that your landlord wants you to leave your home or wants to stop you doing something, such as complaining to Environmental Health about the condition of the property, or you ask them to carry out pending repairs.
What is illegal eviction?
Illegal or unlawful eviction is when your landlord, your landlord’s agent, or someone else unlawfully deprives you of all or part of your home. Eviction could be by force, by changing the locks while you are out or actions such as locking a toilet door or blocking access to a part of your home.
Our Housing Needs and Advice Team can explain your rights and what actions we can take if you have been illegally evicted.
Remember, you do not have to leave your home simply because your landlord tells you to.
