
The Incredible Dr Guttmann
Theatre in the Villages is a rural touring scheme that brings professional theatre and entertainment to village halls across Buckinghamshire. It relies upon volunteers (local promoters) to manage all aspects of “putting on a show” in their own village. They chose the play, sell the tickets and manage all aspects of the show when it come to their hall. It is a great fun way to bring people togetther. It offers a way to get to know one another and to generate funds for local causes e.g. village hall funds, through the selling of refreshments and raffles in the interval etc.
Theatre in the Villages shows are programmed to take place during the Autumn period betrween end of September and start of December. This year’s programme will be available on this website end of July 2013.
Theatre in the Villages 2012
2012 was a great year for Theatre in the Villages with 43 shows taking place within Aylesbury Vale, Wycombe and South Bucks districts. One thousand more tickets were sold this year in comparison to 2011. the programme offered a wide range of variety from drama productions such as David Copperfiled, diary of a Nobody, Italian themed storytelling, Victorian magicians and review shows themed on opera and Noel Coward.
In celebration of London 2012 AVDC played the lead role invited Karen Simpson Productions to commision a new drama play telling the story of the pioneering work of Dr Guttmann at aylesbury’s Stoke Mandeville Hospital and how it led to the birth of the Paralympic Games. The World Premiere of “The Incredible Doctor Guttmann” took place at Aylesbury’s Waterside Theatre on 20 October before touring to 8 venues in Buckinghamshire and 19 venues across the UK.
Local Promoters – how to join Theatre in the Villages 2013
• The scheme is funded by Aylesbury Vale, South Bucks and Wycombe District Councils.
• The opportunity is open to any group in these areas to act as hosts, promoting a visit from a performing company and helping with the organisation of the event in order to foster local community enjoyment.
