The Big Tree Plant

1,000,000 new trees to be planted in English urban and residential areas by the end of March 2015.

The Big Tree Plant is a new campaign to encourage people and communities to plant more trees in England's towns, cities and neighbourhoods. It is a partnership bringing together national tree-planting organisations and local groups working with Defra and the Forestry Commission to plant trees throughout England.

From April 2011, £4.2m will be available to support community groups to plant trees in towns, cities and residential areas throughout England. The funding is for community and civic groups, or other non-profit organisations to establish community-led tree planting projects in areas that would benefit most.

The trees must be planted in streets or in green places that are open to all to visit or where local people will benefit from them. Whoever owns the land must give permission and support to the project, and there must be a plan to care for trees after they are planted. Groups working in areas where more trees would help to improve residents’ quality of life are strongly encouraged to apply for the funding.

Anybody can get involved by planting and caring for trees to help make neighbourhoods more attractive, healthy places to live. Take back responsibility for enhancing green space in your neighbourhood! How can AVDC help you?

Although AVDC cannot get the cash ourselves we are able to help community groups in a number of ways by:

  • identifying suitable/unsuitable areas for your tree planting - checking land ownership, design advice, searching for pipes and cables and minimising risk of hazards, legal nuisances or subsidence to households nearby.
  • providing technical advice in the form of helpful leaflets on health and safety, species choice, planting methods, after care etc.
  • advising on the use of reputable contractors and suppliers of trees and materials.
  • providing local network co-ordination
  • consulting communities where tree planting is to take place
  • providing tools and expertise at events
  • incorporating after care and maintenance in our existing work programmes
  • recording the who, what, where, when, why on our trees database
  • serving Tree Preservation Orders to increase protection against known future threats to the planting
