Aylesbury Vale District Council has announced dates for its waste collection service over the festive period.

From Monday 25 December to Saturday 13 January there will be changes to residents’ normal refuse and recycling collections.

The changes mean that collections will be two days late for the first two weeks and a day late for the third week during this period. Normal refuse and recycling collections will resume on Monday 15 January 2007.

Bin hangers outlining the changes are being sent to every home in the district. And residents are also being asked to make sure they recycle as much of their waste over Christmas as possible.

The amount of waste produced in the district increases by as much as 25 per cent over the festive period. This places extra pressure on waste collection services and generates increased environmental burdens through landfilling.

Much of this extra waste can be recycled. Glass bottles and jars, cans, paper and plastics recycling can all be placed in recycling baskets and boxes for the kerbside recycling collections.

The waste sites at Rabans Lane, Aylesbury, and the Ring Road Industrial Estate in Buckingham will be open from 8am to 5pm as usual over the holiday period except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day for the recycling of cardboard, cans, glass, paper and Christmas trees.
Residents who have a brown bin can use it to recycle their Christmas tree (as long as the lid can be closed) and some garden centres shred trees.

Christmas cards should be taken along to recycling points at WH Smith, TK Maxx and Tesco, as they can’t go in the paper recycling box or brown bin. Christmas wrapping paper cannot be recycled or composted by the council because of sticky tape, glitter, ribbons and foil.

The revised Christmas and New Year refuse and recycling collections are as follows:

Normal collection day                  Revised collection day
Monday 25 December                 Wednesday 27 December
Tuesday 26 December               Thursday 28 December
Wednesday 27 December          Friday 29 December
Thursday 28 December              Saturday 30 December
Friday 29 December                    Tuesday 2 January
Monday 1 January                         Wednesday 3 January
Tuesday 2 January                       Thursday 4 January
Wednesday 3 January                 Friday 5 January
Thursday 4 January                     Saturday 6 January
Friday 5 January                           Monday 8 January
Monday 8 January                        Tuesday 9 January
Tuesday 9 January                      Wednesday 10 January
Wednesday 10 January              Thursday 11 January
Thursday 11 January                   Friday 12 January
Friday 12 January                        Saturday 13 January

Paper, cans and plastics recycling will be collected on the same day as your refuse, following the same fortnightly pattern. Glass recycling will also be collected on the same day as refuse, following a four-weekly pattern.

Councillor Michael Edmonds, Cabinet Member for Housing, Environment and Health, said: “We know that it’s a nuisance when the schedule changes, especially for such a long period. However, this is the only solution if we are to avoid leaving some people without any waste collection for two weeks.”

He added: “Christmas will soon be with us and many people will eat and drink heartily which, along with cards, wrapping paper and boxes, will produce more household rubbish and waste. We can, of course, all help by recycling as much as possible, therefore causing less rubbish to go to landfill. Let’s make it a ‘green’ Christmas by ensuring as much of our waste is disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.”
