Aylesbury Vale District Council has resolved to grant planning permission for Crest Nicholson’s plans for the 4.2 acre Walton Street site.

The development at Walton Street will pave the way for the wider Waterside scheme, creating a new 525 space multi-storey car park in a bright, safe and modern environment. In addition there will be more than 200 new apartments in six separate blocks – 24 of which will be affordable housing – and a new club house for the Aylesbury ex servicemen’s club.

The multi-storey car park planned for the site will provide the extra parking spaces needed when the Waterside project begins. And the new homes adjacent to the car park will kick-start the residential element to the Waterside scheme.

Planning permission for the scheme will be approved subject to the council receiving amended plans relating to landscaping and tree planting and the satisfactory completion of a Section 106 Agreement, a binding legal agreement made under the Town and Country Planning Acts that is a normal part of the planning process.

Crest Nicholson expects to start on the works at the Walton Street site this spring. AVDC has also acquired the former Bucks Herald site, which will be used as a temporary car park until work starts on the new theatre, to keep an adequate supply of parking spaces in the town centre while work takes place.

The Waterside scheme received a further boost this week after the government awarded a £4 million grant to bring forward the development of the council-owned canalside Circus Field. The project, which is a key part of the Waterside development, will create 152 private and social housing homes, a new canal basin and servicing and repair facilities for canal boats.

Norman Skedge, Director of Environment and Planning, said, “The Walton Street development is a great project for Aylesbury and a significant milestone in the Waterside scheme. There will be more car parking spaces in the town centre ahead of the main Waterside construction works and this will be a great help to shops and businesses alike, ensuring people can get in and out of town as the development takes place.”

Mike Walker, Development Director for Crest Nicholson (Chiltern) Ltd, added, “Walton Street will deliver a contemporary multi-storey car park, the new club house for the Aylesbury ex servicemen’s club and much needed new homes. Not only will it be a landmark development in its own right, but importantly it also represents the first significant phase of the overall regeneration of Aylesbury town centre.”
