Residents in over 600 Aylesbury Vale households are in danger of losing one of their basic rights because they are not on the register of electors.

The new register for 2007 is published on 1 December. Although every household has received a registration form and two reminders, more than 600 households in the district have still not registered to vote at council elections due to be held in May next year.

Anyone who is not registered cannot vote and may also have difficulty obtaining credit or making other financial arrangements.

Annual registration forms were sent to every home in August, followed by reminders in September and October. The council also sent out canvassers to make personal calls to those who had not completed the forms. The updated register published this week is based on responses to these forms.

Chris Sheard, Electoral Services Manager, said: “Every time there’s an election, hundreds of voters miss out because they have failed to register. We don’t want anyone to lose their right to vote at next year’s local elections or have credit problems in the future. I would urge anyone who still hasn’t registered to do so as soon as possible.”

It’s not too late to ensure a vote next May. If you missed the recent deadline to return your form you can still register by downloading a registration form from the council’s website www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk by following the link from the homepage. You can also contact electoral services on 01296 585807 or email electoralregistration@aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk

Outside of the annual canvass period (August to November), the register is updated on a monthly basis throughout the year. The next cut-off date is 11 December and monthly thereafter until the final opportunity on 5 April to be added on the rolling register before the local elections take place.

The full Aylesbury Vale register will be available for inspection at the customer service centre in Aylesbury from 1 December. You can see the Buckingham constituency register at the council’s offices in Buckingham and Winslow.
