Time is running out for people wanting to cast a vote in May’s local elections – but who haven’t registered with the district council.

Around 98 per cent of electors within Aylesbury Vale are correctly registered but the remaining two per cent (an estimated 1,360 households) run the risk of missing out on 3 May.

The 18 April registration deadline is approaching fast and Aylesbury Vale District Council is making a final call for those eligible to vote to ensure they are on the electoral roll. Anyone who has not applied by 18 April will not be able to vote in the local elections.

Forms are downloadable from www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/elections, or by contacting the council’s electoral services team. Registering is particularly important for anyone who has recently moved home.

Les White, Deputy Returning Officer, said: “Every time there’s an election, hundreds of voters miss out because they failed to register in time. The right to vote is fundamental, but if you are not on the register, you have no say. I would urge anyone who still hasn’t registered to do so as soon as possible.”

Residents who wish to make a fresh application for a postal vote also need to ensure forms are completed and returned to the council by 5pm on 18 April.

In addition, voters have the opportunity to ask someone to vote on their behalf. Proxy applications must be received by the council by 5pm on 25 April. Anyone taken ill after that date should contact the electoral services team for advice.

If you have moved recently or don’t remember registering by phone or post last autumn, you can check you are registered to vote by calling the electoral services team at AVDC on 01296 585807, or by emailing electoralreg@aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk
