A new fee structure for car parks in Aylesbury town centre, which should help part-time workers and shoppers, will come into effect on 14 May.

Car park fees have usually been set for short-stay car parks and long-stay. Aylesbury Vale District Council will now introduce an additional five-hour rate to allow part-time workers and shoppers a cheaper parking option close to the town centre.

The five-hour rate will apply to all short-stay and some long-stay car parks, although tariffs will differ depending on which car park you choose.

Exchange Street, Hampden House, Canalside and Whitehall Street will apply a £2.50 charge for parking up to five hours and £4 for parking all day. The full day rate at Walton Street, Walton Green and Friarscroft will remain unchanged at £3.

In addition, the Hale Street car park will be restricted to a maximum one-hour only stay and seven bays on the ground floor of the Civic Centre car park will be for 30 minute parking only, at a cost of 40p.

The changes to parking charges in the town were recommended by the Aylesbury Car Park Tariff Review Group (ACPTRG), which is made up of representatives from AVDC, neighbouring parish councils and business interest groups. ACPTRG consulted more than 500 people, including permit holders, district and county councillors, and Town Centre Partnership members, before recommending the new fees.

David Betts, Head of Property and Operational Services, said: “Works on the Waterside scheme will start soon and we want to encourage as many people as possible to use the Friarscroft, Walton Green and Walton Street car parks, which are only a short walk from town. This should free up more spaces for shoppers and part-time workers.  In response to objections, we are pleased to confirm that Hampden House will remain a long stay car park.”
