Motorists will face different levels of fines for different types of parking offences in Aylesbury Vale under new legislation coming into force next year.

Aylesbury Vale District Council has had to adopt a new two-tier parking fine system, which will see drivers committing more serious offences, such as parking in a disabled parking space without displaying the relevant badge, facing a fine of £70.

Less serious breaches, like parking longer than permitted, will attract a fine of £50. If paid within 14 days, the £70 charge will drop to £35 and the lesser fine to £25.

Other £70 offences include parking at a bus stop, outside a school in a restricted zone, on a taxi rank, or on yellow lines, and parking in a resident’s space without a valid permit.

Offences meriting a £50 fine include parking beyond paid time or without a valid ticket, parking in a closed car park and not parking within bay markings.

The new charges represent a fairer deal for motorists who park legally and will act as a strong deterrent against more serious parking offences. The current penalty for all parking contraventions in Aylesbury Vale is a £60 fine.

The two-tier parking fine scheme will come into effect on 31 March 2008 when the new Traffic Management Act comes into force. New breaches contained in the law include double parking and parking on zig-zag lines near pedestrian crossings.

Councillor Kevin McPartland, Cabinet Member for Civic Amenities, said: “I hope drivers will welcome the new two-tier system of penalties. The current arrangement where fines are the same whether a motorist has parked on a pedestrian crossing putting lives at risk or over-staying a parking bay by a few minutes does little to change driver behaviour. The new penalties send out a clear message to people who commit the more serious parking contraventions that it won’t be tolerated.”
