The site of Aylesbury Vale District Council’s former Exchange Street offices has been transformed into a temporary car park – just in time for Christmas shopping.

The new car park, called Canalside Extension, has 60 long-stay spaces and is open every day with evening use.

Visitors, shoppers and non-permit holders can use the car park at a cost of £4 for stays of up to 24 hours, or £2.50 for up to five hours. Sunday and evening parking is free.

The car park has been opened to ensure there is an adequate supply of parking spaces for shoppers, workers and visitors to the town centre during work on the Waterside project. A new 525-space multi-storey car park is set to open in Walton Street in autumn 2008 as part of the town centre redevelopment scheme.

Councillor Kevin McPartland, Cabinet Member for Civic Amenities, said: “Our priority has been to make sure as many alternative parking spaces as possible are available to people driving in to Aylesbury to shop, work or visit as the Waterside development takes shape. The additional parking spaces will benefit residents, shops and businesses alike, especially in the run up to Christmas.”

In the run up to Christmas, in Aylesbury, car parking will be free in council car parks and the Friars Square shopping centre car park on:
• Thursday evenings after 4.30pm on 13 and 20 December
• Saturdays 15 and 22 December
• Sundays – always free parking
