Aylesbury Vale District Council’s concessionary travel scheme for the over 60s and people with disabilities will offer a better deal from 1 April this year.

The council has reduced the charge for travel tokens from £12 to £5 and has doubled the amount of tokens offered from £30 to £60 a year.

The travel tokens are provided as an alternative to the bus pass and are available to people who are unable to use buses because of frailty or disability, or who live in a parish where there is a limited or no bus service. Rail cards are also available with travel tokens at a cost of £2.

Residents can claim their travel tokens or rail card from 5 March. For the first time this year, customers will need a photocard, similar to that issued for bus passes, to purchase tokens.

The bus pass scheme remains the same as in previous years – anyone aged 60 or over and people with disabilities can apply for a free permit which gives free, off-peak travel on buses on any journeys starting or finishing in Aylesbury Vale.

Councillor Pam Pearce, Cabinet Member for Community Matters, said: “We want to help residents who find it difficult to use public transport, such as people with disabilities and those who live in villages with few or no bus services. The council’s new travel token scheme will be a major improvement in service to older residents and people with disabilities at no additional cost to local tax payers. Our message is simple: Whether you are part of the current scheme or not, apply for your new travel tokens today!”

Residents can obtain forms and make their applications for travel tokens at the council’s offices in Aylesbury, Buckingham and Winslow. Proof of your age, identity, residency and a passport-size photo are required. Applications for rail cards can be made at the cash office in 66 High Street, Aylesbury.
