The people of Aylesbury Vale are being invited to submit suggestions for a permanent name for the new £27 million theatre being built in the district.
Located on the southern side of Exchange Street in Aylesbury, the new theatre will be able to accommodate 1,200 people for seated events, such as dance or drama productions, or 1,800 for standing events such as rock concerts. The theatre will also contain a second space suitable for smaller drama productions, conferences, workshops and community use.
Aylesbury Vale District Council is holding a competition to see who can come up with the best name for the venue. Judges are looking for a name which will be a positive reflection of the history, location or the character of the area.
After nominations have been considered, a panel of AVDC members, architects and the theatre management company will draw up a shortlist from which a permanent name will be chosen early next year.
Councillor John Cartwright, Leader of the Council, hopes to see a good response to the competition. “The new theatre is without doubt the biggest single leisure development that Aylesbury Vale has ever seen. We want to make sure it has the most appropriate name possible and positively welcome suggestions from the local community,” he said.
The deadline for submissions is 31 October 2007. If more than one person suggests the winning name, those people will be entered into a prize draw.
The winner will be presented with a bottle of champagne at the time the name is announced and will subsequently receive a VIP invitation to attend the official opening of the new theatre, which is expected to be in late 2009.
Suggestions should be emailed to newtheatrecompetition@aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk or members of the public can write to Caroline Wheller, AVDC Leisure & Cultural Services, FREEPOST SCE 11939, 66 High Street, Aylesbury HP20 1ZA.
A virtual tour of the theatre is available on Aylesbury Vale District Council’s website to give people a taster of what the multi-million pound entertainment centre will offer. Go to www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk and click on the link on the home page for the virtual tour.
