Older people in Waddesdon and the surrounding area are being given the chance to swap their old slippers for a new pair, thanks to Aylesbury Vale District Council and its partners.

AVDC has teamed up with Buckinghamshire Primary Care Trust, Buckinghamshire County Council, Carers Bucks, Thames Valley Police and Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service to offer free budget, safety and health advice at an event being held on 24 July at Waddesdon Village Hall.

The ‘Senior Wellbeing Fair’ is an opportunity for the over 60s to exchange their old ill-fitting slippers for new fitted non-slip soled ones. Advice and guidance on footwear and falls will also be given with the slippers.

The aim of the sloppy slipper exchange is to provide older people with indoor footwear that will help prevent falls and related injuries and, in turn, relieve pressure on GPs and hospitals.

There’s a free drop-in session for family carers with information and support provided by Carers Bucks. Visitors can also enjoy a special relaxation event to take the cares and worries out of their day.

Jenny Newton, AVDC Health Improvement Officer, said: “It’s not often older people can get something for nothing, and improve their safety at the same time, so I’d encourage them to bring along their old slippers and take advantage of this special offer.”

A team of experts will be on hand to offer advice to visitors about a variety of issues. The experts will include professionals from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue, health and benefits services and the district council’s home service.

Free refreshments will be available and a free lunch will be supplied from 12 noon to 2pm. A raffle has also been organised to give residents the chance to win three £10 shopping vouchers.

The event will be held at Waddesdon Village Hall, Baker Street, Waddesdon, and will run from 10am to 2pm.
