Aylesbury Cemetery is entering an exciting era in its 151-year history in the hands of new owners.

The ownership of the 15-acre Tring Road site was transferred from Aylesbury Vale District Council to Aylesbury Town Council earlier this month.

Councillor Netta Glover, Chairman of AVDC, will formally hand the keys to the cemetery to Councillor Jenny Puddefoot, Mayor of Aylesbury, at a presentation next week (11 June).

Aylesbury Town Council is now responsible for the day to day running of the cemetery. This work involves:
• Grounds maintenance, such as grass cutting, maintenance of footpaths and emptying litter bins
• Management and maintenance of the cemetery’s buildings and infrastructure, including the mausoleums
• A programme of memorial stability testing
• An annual review of fees and charges
• Administration of the interment service, which includes liaising with funeral directors and families and the booking of interments

The town council has already invested £120,000 to be ready for the take-over and more money is set to be spent on making improvements to the site. In the short term the storage units currently in the Turnfurlong car park will be moved inside the cemetery and the floral displays will be improved during the summer. In the long term the town council hopes to turn the currently empty chapel into a chapel of remembrance and also introduce a ‘Friends of the Cemetery’ scheme.

Aylesbury Cemetery has in excess of 10,000 memorials, many of which are more than 30 years old. There are around 200 burials and 50 ashes interments at the cemetery each year.

Councillor David Thompson, AVDC Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “The cemetery transfer was a decision that was not taken lightly but we are confident that the town council will do a good job managing the site. We hope that the people of this district will continue to have a well-maintained and beautifully landscaped cemetery for many years to come.”

Councillor Jenny Puddefoot, Mayor of Aylesbury, said: “Aylesbury Town Council is committed to maintaining and improving this important asset. We are in a position to be responsive and sensitive to the needs of local people and will work towards increasing the opportunities for reflection and remembrance in a beautiful, tranquil, well-managed cemetery.”
