Aylesbury Vale District Council is urging postal voters to return their votes as soon as possible.
With the election date fast approaching it is important residents return their postal votes promptly in order to meet the 3 May deadline.
Once a postal vote has been issued the voter is unable to vote in person at the polling stations. However, completed postal votes can be handed in to any of the polling stations in Aylesbury Vale or alternatively to the AVDC offices in Great Western Street, Aylesbury, by the close of poll at 10pm on 3 May.
The postal ballot papers now come with a ‘postal voting statement’ which voters have to sign and include their date of birth. Councils then have to scan and match the date of birth and the signature with the one already on file in order to verify the voter. AVDC is carrying out the scanning and matching electronically.
The majority of the 19,600 postal ballot papers were issued early last week. Over 60 per cent have been returned so far.
Les White, Deputy Returning Officer, said: “People who have a postal vote are encouraged to return their ballot papers as soon as they can. The deadline is the same as for people who vote in person: 10pm on 3 May. If for any reason anyone with a postal vote decides they would prefer to go to a polling station on 3 May, they can deposit their postal vote there. However, they cannot be issued with an ordinary ballot paper at the station. This is to ensure that people do not get the opportunity to vote twice.”
If you lose or accidentally spoil your postal ballot or voting statement, please call the helpline number, 01296 585359, as soon as possible, and the council can arrange to issue you with a replacement. You can apply for a replacement up to 5pm on the day of the election (3 May).
