An innovative and exciting integrated dance group in Aylesbury is looking for new members to help produce their next performance.
The Doorways dance project, which is run by Aylesbury Vale District Council, gives both able-bodied children and adults and people with physical disabilities the chance to participate in dance activities and develop new skills.
Members of the group are currently working with trained instructors to produce performances at next year’s Activate dance event and Roald Dahl Festival. The workshops, for anyone aged 12 years or over, involve a variety of different performance arts including music, dance and storytelling through movement.
AVDC is aiming to encourage people of all ages, with or without physical impairment, to work together to produce a high quality dance performance that is both innovative and inspirational.
Councillor David Thompson, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “Often children and adults with physical disabilities, including those who are wheelchair-bound, do not think they can be performers and dancers. The Doorways project brings together both able-bodied children and adults and people with disabilities to give them an equal opportunity to become dance performers and creators. It has really helped members of the group to change their perception of themselves, giving them a very positive self image and building their self confidence.”
The classes take place every Wednesday (term time only) between 4pm and 5pm at the Queens Park Arts Centre. It costs £4 per person, per session, or £2 with a Passport to Leisure Card.
