Aylesbury Vale District Council has been named as one of the best councils to work for in the country.

The council was awarded 18th place in the prestigious ‘Best Councils to Work For’ list, published by The Times newspaper, which aims to recognise local authorities that have the best workplaces in the UK.

This is the first year that the list has been produced, and the district council’s ranking was arrived at by an external company – Best Companies, on behalf of The Times – comparing the results of a confidential staff survey with the other councils who took part.

AVDC was assessed on a variety of workforce related criteria including leadership, wellbeing and personal growth. The results will enable the council to draw up an action plan to further improve its working practices.

Councillor John Cartwright, Leader of the Council, said: “I’m really pleased that AVDC has been acknowledged as one of the best councils to work for in the country. The council’s ranking is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of our 620-strong workforce, who provide excellent services on a daily basis.

“We are here to serve the residents of Aylesbury Vale but it is also important to remember that we have a responsibility to look after our staff. This result is a great achievement and something upon which we can build for the future.”

The overall winner of the competition was Vale Royal Borough Council, based in Cheshire. Other councils in the top 20 included Westminster City Council, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Shropshire County Council.
