The deadline is fast approaching to enter a competition to win an invitation to the official opening of Aylesbury’s new theatre.

With work underway on the exciting new state-of-the-art theatre in Exchange Street, the hunt is on for a name for the venue. Aylesbury Vale District Council is holding a competition to see who can come up with the best one.

The name needs to be short and memorable, easy to spell and easy to find on the internet – preferably not the same as any other venue in the UK. It doesn’t need to have the words ‘Aylesbury’ or ‘theatre’ in the name.

Councillor John Cartwright, Leader of the Council, says: “We would like the name to be a positive reflection of the history, location or the character of the area. For example, the location next to the canal could suggest Lockside or The Union. Or it could say something about the way the building looks, with its distinctive use of limestone, slate, glass and wood.”

The competition will be judged by a panel of AVDC members, the architects and the theatre management company. The council expects to announce the result early next year

The winner will be presented with a bottle of champagne at the time the name is announced and will subsequently receive a VIP invitation to attend the official opening of the theatre.

Suggestions should be emailed to newtheatrecompetition@aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk or members of the public can write to Caroline Wheller, AVDC Leisure & Cultural Services, FREEPOST SCE 11939, 66 High Street, Aylesbury HP20 1ZA. The closing date is 31 October 2007.

A virtual tour of the theatre is available on AVDC’s website to give people a taster of what the multi-million pound venue will offer. Go to www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk and click on the link on the home page for the virtual tour.
