Aylesbury Town Council and Aylesbury Vale District Council are planning to brighten up many areas of Aylesbury with more spring flowering bulbs.
Whilst the aim of this project is to make Aylesbury look brighter and prettier, it should also help improve the ambience of the area and generate further local pride.
AVDC is planning to plant a variety of daffodil and crocus bulbs across nine sites in Aylesbury, and is also spreading further afield to plant several areas in Wendover, Halton and Buckingham.
In Aylesbury, the district council plans to plant areas in Turnfurlong, Walton Court, Fowler Road, Carlton Close, Coppice Way, Ellen Road, Fairmile, Meadowcroft and Bedgrove Park. AVDC is also aiming to create a carpet of English bluebells and wood anemones in Bedgrove Spinney.
This year’s entry into Britain in Bloom has encouraged Aylesbury Town Council to focus on the aesthetics of Aylesbury. Town councillors have decided to plant six sites on the main approach roads to the town centre, which are Wendover Road, Tring Road, Buckingham Road, Bicester Road, Oxford Road and Mandeville Road. These sites are to be planted over six weekends starting this month.
Overall the councils are planning on planting over 200,000 bulbs. AVDC has secured funding from a government grant, and Aylesbury Town Council has allocated funding from its environment and Britain in Bloom budgets towards the project.
AVDC is using contractors to plant their bulbs and Aylesbury Town Council has secured the assistance of volunteers to plant their sites. The volunteers include local scouts, guides, brownies, cadets and members of resident’s associations.
Councillor Jenny Puddefoot, Mayor of Aylesbury, said: “The town council feels that this is an excellent opportunity to bring the local communities together to improve and take pride in their local area. Both the councils hope that these projects are a success and the glorious displays of spring flowers in Aylesbury will brighten the early months of 2008.”
Councillor David Thompson, AVDC Cabinet Member for Leisure, commented: “The spring bulbs will provide a real splash of colour and help lift everyone's spirits. The planting programme is a significant effort and will make a real contribution to the district’s environment."
