High School Musical fever hits Aylesbury

Archived press release

Date Published: 15/05/08

Budding dancers of all ages have the chance to hone their skills thanks to a new series of cheerleading sessions that have come to Aylesbury.

The classes for adults and children offer a great way to work out and have fun. Aimed at people aged between five and 65 years old, the sessions include dynamic, athletic and dance-based choreographed routines.

The sessions are held every Friday at Mandeville Secondary School between 4.30pm and 5.30pm for 5 to 11 year olds and between 6pm and 7.30pm for adults. Classes are also planned for 12 to 16 year olds.

The classes are open to residents of Southcourt and Walton Court and organisers hope the sessions, which are run by the Ice Gems Cheerleading Squad, will bring a bit of fun and cheer to the area.

Cheerleading is part of the Southcourt and Walton Court Active England programme, which is funded by Aylesbury Vale District Council and Sport England. The project aims to encourage people of all ages living in these areas to become more physically active by providing low cost activities that they can participate in.

There are activities on offer to children and young people throughout the school holidays and also a variety of sessions that take place weekly including tennis, street dance, football and a toddler sports club. Adults can take part in activities ranging from health walks and chair-based exercises to daytime ballroom dancing classes, yoga and salsa. Evening ballroom dancing classes and more activities for teenage girls are planned for the future.

Councillor David Thompson, AVDC Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “It is very important that through our Active England project we offer opportunities that are a little bit different from the more traditional sports and activities. We are delighted to be teaming up with the Ice Gems Cheerleading Squad, who have all the necessary skills and experience to make these exciting, new sessions a big hit and I hope adults and children will come along and try them out.”
