Vandals have caused thousands of pounds of damage at the new play area

Vandals have caused damage – that will cost thousands of pounds to repair – to a play area in Prebendal Farm, Aylesbury, before it has even opened.

At around 7.15pm on 29 October, the safety surface at the new play area on Somerville Way was severely damaged after being set on fire. A large piece of play equipment was also damaged in the incident.

Aylesbury Vale District Council has expressed its deep disappointment at this mindless act of vandalism and is urging anyone with information to contact Thames Valley Police.

“We need the public to help to identify these people,” said Councillor David Thompson, Cabinet Member for Leisure. “This is not just an act of wanton vandalism, but is serious criminal damage and we want to see those responsible prosecuted.

“The cost of repairing and replacing the safety surfacing and play equipment will run into thousands, and that is regardless of the time and labour needed to remove the damaged items. The matter has been reported to the police and I would urge members of the public to come forward if they have any information. We need their help to catch whoever has done this.”

The official opening of the play area is still set to go ahead on 27 November.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Thames Valley Police on 08458 505505, the council on 01296 585228 or Crimestoppers, anonymously and in confidence, on 0800 555111.
