Blankets in poor condition can be a fire hazard and can put older and vulnerable people particularly at risk
Aylesbury Vale residents are to be offered free electric blanket tests to ensure they sleep safe and sound this winter.
The tests, organised by AVDC and Buckinghamshire County Council Trading Standards, will be available in Aylesbury and Buckingham on 8 October.
Residents can bring along their blankets and have them put through a series of rigorous checks, including ensuring the plug and fuses are working properly and the wiring and elements inside the blankets are safe.
People whose blankets fail the test will be given information on offers and discounts available for replacement blankets.
Although electric blankets have to comply with strict safety standards when they are sold, they do wear with age, or become damaged. Blankets in poor condition can be a fire hazard and can put older and vulnerable people particularly at risk.
Councillor Sir Beville Stanier, AVDC Cabinet Member for Environment and Health, said: “Sadly, every year, many people are seriously injured or even killed because of faulty electric blankets. They are also the cause of fires and major damage to property. The elderly and disabled are particularly at risk, and we would therefore urge people to take up this offer of free electric blanket testing.”
Councillor Margaret Dewar, BCC Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “It’s very important that electric blankets that are over three years old or in constant use get tested every year. It doesn’t take long and it could help prevent a fire. Used correctly, electric blankets can be a great comfort, but blankets need to be properly maintained and stored. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”
The testing will take place at the Buckingham Centre in Verney Walk, Buckingham, between 9.30am and 12pm and at the Trading Standards Office in Walton Street, Aylesbury, between 1.30pm and 4.30pm.
Testing is by appointment only and members of the public who would like their electric blanket tested are invited to contact Trading Standards on 01296 382649.
