The car park provides 525 parking spaces
Aylesbury’s new multi-storey car park is now open to the public.
The £5 million facility in Walton Street – the first significant construction phase of the Waterside scheme to be finished – provides 525 parking spaces for shoppers, workers and visitors to the town.
Designed and built by Bourne Parking Limited, the development includes 28 disabled users’ spaces, 30 CCTV cameras covering entries and exits and all floors, 10 emergency help points and a ‘pay on foot’ system that allows you to pay upon your return to your vehicle.
Walton Street car park will be open 24 hours a day and is user friendly, with wide, sloping ramps and without the awkwardly shaped pillars that can cause problems in multi-storey car parks.
The new facility has been constructed mainly on the site of the former Ex-Services Club. Much of the concrete, bricks and blocks arising from the demolition of the clubhouse were recycled and reused within the ground works construction.
To construct the car park as quickly as possible, Bourne Parking used a prefabricated building system. The walls, floors and structural frame were constructed in a factory then transported to the site and erected. This system is particularly uncommon and required specialist design and manufacture techniques to achieve.
Walton Street car park is part of a larger scheme of leisure, retail and housing developments in the town. The Waterside development will create a new shopping area on the northern side of Exchange Street which includes a department and food store; a first class theatre on the southern side; and housing developments alongside the canal and at Circus Field.
Councillor John Cartwright, Leader of the Council, said: “It’s a fantastic car park which has been built on time and within budget. There is full CCTV coverage in the car park, a pay on foot system and parking is very reasonably priced so I hope this will prove to be a very attractive proposition for people travelling into the town.
“This facility is another significant milestone in our plans to redevelop the town centre. The new car park will provide the extra parking spaces needed when the Waterside scheme is fully underway.”
Michael Haines, Business Development Director at Bourne Parking Limited, said: “We are delighted to have designed and built the new multi-storey car park in Aylesbury. It’s speedy and efficient assembly on site has set new standards in terms of environmental, sustainable and safe construction methods.”
Parking charges at the Walton Street car park are 70p for up to one hour, £1.40 for up to two hours, £2.50 for up to five hours and £4 for over five hours. Free parking is available on Sunday and in the evenings after 6.30pm.
