Youngsters in Aylesbury Vale are gearing up for a week of fun activities over the half-term holiday.

Sports, arts and crafts workshops, nest box making and a wildlife walk are just some of the dozens of fantastic activities on offer for children and young people to keep them busy over the holiday period.

The first holiday programme of 2009 promises to be great fun while offering something for everyone with a wide variety of activities every day.

Youngsters are being urged to get back to nature during the February half-term, and help feathered friends by making bird feeders and nesting boxes at the Jonathan Page Play Centre in Aylesbury.

The bird box and feeder bonanza takes place between 16 and 20 February as part of National Nest Box Week. Those taking part will also make bird watching hides and try their hand at bird-themed crafts.

Aylesbury Civic Centre is staging a children's play with a difference on 21 February. The Three Little Pigs will incorporate British Sign Language but is suitable for all children aged three to seven, and their families too.

This fantastic puppet performance by the Krazy Kat Theatre Company recreates the timeless children’s fable with tricks, effects and lots of laughs. The show starts at 2pm and tickets are priced at £4.50.

Youngsters will be getting creative at the Queens Park Arts Centre in Aylesbury during the half-term holiday at a series of fun workshops. There are a wide variety of different activities to choose from including street dance, stunt drama, pottery and photography.

Talented and experienced sports coaches will be delivering a half-term programme of sports courses and activity days, which will include football, netball, basketball, hockey and softball to name but a few.

The BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) is giving children and young people the chance to explore the woodlands of Buckingham this half-term. Nina Sperinck from BTCV will be running a guided walk in the woods on 17 February, helping youngsters find natural materials and minibeasts.

The walk will begin from the Air Training Cadets Centre on Stratford Road (opposite the Buckingham Athletic Football Club) at 11am and is suitable for all ages.

Youngsters in Buckingham will also have the chance to make bird feeders of all shapes and sizes, using dried fruit, nuts, seeds and lots more materials. Susan Le from the BTCV is running the session at the Railway Walk on 19 February between 10am and 12pm.

Councillor David Thompson, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Aylesbury Vale District Council, said: “We are committed to providing children and young people with play and leisure opportunities during the half-term break and throughout the rest of the year. There is a wonderful array of activities this half-term designed to interest and encourage youngsters to go along and take part.”

Bookings can now be made on the February half-term holiday activities and the full programme can be viewed on the council website.

The holiday programme is also available to view at schools, libraries, council offices and Tourist Information Centres. Further details are available by calling 01296 585165.
