Aylesbury Vale District Council has approved a decision that will see the creation of more affordable housing in the district.
At a meeting of the council’s cabinet on 13 January, councillors agreed to the redevelopment of Coopers Yard car park in Aylesbury and the transfer of the land at open market value to the Catalyst Housing Group.
Catalyst is proposing to build 74 new homes, of which a minimum of 40 per cent will be affordable, together with redeveloping the adjoining Heron House.
Development is not expected for another three years but the cabinet decision enables the project to progress to the next stage.
The transfer of the land is subject to the inclusion of a clause in the contract stating that AVDC and the housing association will ensure that 59 public car parking spaces are maintained before, during and after development.
AVDC has been working with Catalyst since 2005 to develop affordable housing on the site currently occupied by Heron House. The building is home to the county court and the Jobcentre.
The proposed development will make a valuable contribution to increasing the supply of much- needed affordable housing over the coming years.
Councillor Michael Edmonds, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “I welcome the 74 new homes in the town centre, maintaining at all times the 59 public car parking spaces, and the financial benefit to the Vale. Ensuring affordable housing is available
across the district is very important, as we know how difficult it can be to get on the housing ladder. That is why this deal is best all round, it will give the council funds to spend on services for the public, and will also provide affordable housing for local people.”
