Residents are being invited to comment on the draft tree management strategy

Aylesbury Vale District Council has set out new plans to protect and enhance the district’s tree population.

Residents are being invited to comment on the council’s draft tree management strategy, which outlines how the council will manage, maintain and improve the trees it is responsible for up to 2017.

The strategy places emphasis on protecting the district’s existing trees, promoting and practicing good tree care and planting new trees.

AVDC is responsible for around 20,000 trees in the Vale, which are mainly located in parks and open spaces. About £110,000 is spent each year on tree surgery, felling and replacement planting.

Every tree on council-owned land is recorded on a database. The records are updated every five years.

Councillor David Thompson, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “Trees play a very important role in all of our lives. They improve the appearance of our parks and open spaces, provide a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, and create better air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and filtering pollutants.

“The draft tree strategy sets out how we can make the most of these benefits over the next few years. I encourage anyone who is interested in improving the district’s environment to take a look at the document and give us their views.”

The draft strategy will be available on the council’s website from 2 January 2009.

Alternatively, you can contact the green spaces team on 01296 585165 or email
