Get fit for the New Year

Get fit for the New Year

Aylesbury Vale District Council is helping residents kick-start their fitness plans and stick to their New Year’s resolutions to get fit and healthy.

The council’s leisure team is encouraging residents to try out a range of activities on offer in Aylesbury this month.

There are activities to suit adults of all ages and fitness levels, from complete beginners to those improving their skills.

Budding dancers have the chance to try their hand at ballroom dancing, cheerleading and street dance classes.

A ballroom dance class will take place at the Walton Court Community Centre from 1.30pm to 2.30pm each week, starting 13 January. A variety of dance styles will be taught, including the waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, and tango.

Cheerleading sessions for adults are held every Friday between 4.15pm and 5.15pm at the Church of the Good Sheppard in Churchill Avenue. The classes, run by the Ice Gems Cheerleading Club, include dynamic, athletic and dance-based choreographed routines.

Street dance classes are to be held at the Walton Court Community Centre to give adults the chance to learn the latest street dance moves and keep fit at the same time in a friendly environment. The sessions will take place from 7pm to 8pm, starting 29 January.

The community centre will also be the venue for a mum and baby exercise class with weekly sessions taking place from 9.30am to 10.30am, starting 21 January. Sessions are only available for Walton Court and Southcourt mums due to limited space.

A new sports course designed to get adults re–discovering the joys of tennis is also launched this month. AVDC has joined forces with Aylesbury Tennis Club to set up a 10–week ‘back to tennis’ course.

The course is designed to encourage complete beginners, or people who used to enjoy playing tennis, to play and enjoy this fantastic sport. Qualified coaches will provide fun, friendly and relaxed sessions which will enable people taking part to develop their confidence and skills in a safe and supportive environment.

The sessions will start from 22 January and will be held on Thursdays, 7pm to 8pm at Aylesbury Tennis Club in Wendover Road. It costs just £3 per session.

The tennis course is hot on the heels of the successful 'back to sport' netball sessions which continue to be held at Mandeville Secondary School every Monday between 7pm and 8pm.

Dodgeball, one of the country's newest sports, is being brought to Aylesbury in the New Year. Sessions will be held at Mandeville Secondary School between 7.30pm and 8.30pm, starting on 3 February.

Councillor David Thompson, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “This is the time of year when everyone makes a number of resolutions and I’m pleased that we can help residents achieve their aim to get fit and healthy. I encourage anyone wanting to have a change in lifestyle or wanting to take up a new sport or leisure activity to join one of the classes we are offering in the New Year.”

Places on the sessions can be reserved by contacting Abbi McMullen on 01296 431580.

Aylesbury Vale residents can also take part in a range of free and special offer sport and leisure taster sessions at venues around the district as part of the Reactivate Bucks! campaign from 31 January to 8 February. As well as the activities already listed above, others include taekwondo and badminton at Aylesbury High School, disability sports at Queens Park Arts Centre and Stoke Mandeville Stadium as well as buggy walks from various locations.
